I run my own for-profit business in the cultural sector, and it’s certainly true that lots of arts organisations don’t adhere to rigorous business standards, and worse still don’t think they need to. But it’s a fact that there are other business ‘values’ besides profit and loss, and arts managers often perform miracles on shoestrings. I’m fed up of people slagging off both the cultural sector and government as hotbeds of waste and incubators of low standards and a lack of professionalism, and holding up some vague notion of ‘business’ as an exemplar of how to manage an organisation. I work with other private businesses every day that are appallingly unprofessional, and have nothing to teach the arts world.
